Grace University Volleyball traveled Tuesday, August 22nd to Oskaloosa, IA to face off against the William Penn Statesmen. Tuesday was the lady Royals' season opener and the home opener for William Penn. Grace came into the match 0-0 and William Penn 0-4 after the Statesmen had traveled to Huntington University for a tournament on August 19-20th. Tuesday's match-up was won by William Penn 3-0 with scores of 25-22, 25-16, and 25-15.
The Statesmen won with a hitting percentage of 0.181 for the night while the Royals had as many hitting errors as kills suffering 24 errors and earning just 24 kills. William Penn's offensive efforts were led by outside hitters #8 Jordan Carter and #17 Claire Simmons with 10 kills and 7 kills respectively. Grace's kill leader on the night was junior outside hitter Taylor Thompson who had 8 kills on the night followed by three hitters who added 4 kills each-senior Aaliyah Dunbar, senior Becca Entz and sophomore Alicia Pierce.
Defensively the liberos tallied similar efforts as Statemens libero Ashley Miller and Royals libero Chloe Corbett both recorded 19 digs on the evening. The Statesmen ended the night leading the defensive stat columns however, with 67 total team digs to Grace's 52 and 4 team blocks to Grace's 2.
Coach Courtney Moore commented on the match, "I was proud of our team for their effort in their first match of the season. We played too sloppy to get the win, but this team has the talent and the heart to achieve great things this season. We know what we need to focus on in our next few practices and we will be ready to head into our second match with more precision and confidence."
