Women’s Basketball: Royals Steamroll Oglala-Lakota in Highest-Scoring Game in 20 Years

OMAHA, NEBRASKA: The Royals hosted the Oglala-Lakota College Lady Bravehearts on Saturday, February 3.  After being up 54-15 at halftime, the Royals defeated the Lady Bravehearts 93-44.  This game marks the highest-scoring game Grace's women's basketball program has seen since the 1998-99 season.  For the third time this season, every member of the team scored. 

The Royals started the game with a 10-2 run in the first two minutes; they extended their lead to 20-5 halfway through the first quarter.  By the end of the first quarter, the Royals were up 35-9.  They continued to extend their lead in the second quarter, only allowing the Bravehearts to score two points in the first nine minutes of the quarter.  By halftime, the Royals were up 54-15. 

In the third quarter, the Royals slowly continued to build up their lead; by the beginning of the fourth quarter, they were up by 50 points at 77-27.  In the fourth quarter, the Bravehearts rallied and played the Royals evenly; with four minutes left in the game, the Royals were up 84-42.  The Royals closed the game with a 9-2 run, bringing the score to 93-44. 

The Royals shot 53.7% from the field (36 of 67), 37% from the 3-point line (10 of 27), and 91.7% from the free throw line (11 of 12), while the Bravehearts shot 26.2% from the field (17 of 65), 20% from the 3-point line (5 of 25), and 62.5% from the free throw line (5 of 8).  The Royals had 47 rebounds, 26 assists, and 11 steals, while the Bravehearts had 31 rebounds, 8 assists, and 10 steals.  The Royals had 32 points off turnovers, 13 second-chance points, 48 points in the paint, 20 fast break points, and 22 bench points.  The Bravehearts had 15 points off turnovers, 10 second-chance points, 20 points in the paint, 8 fast break points, and 10 bench points. 

Every Royal contributed at least 2 points and 2 rebounds.  Four of the Royals scored in double digits, including two women with 20+ points.  Karen Orozco contributed a game-high 26 points; she also had 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals.  Darielle Evans had 22 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 steals, while Marisa Brown had 18 points and 8 rebounds.  Majesty Pelletier contributed a career-high 14 points and 7 rebounds.  Loretta Gamboe contributed 6 points and 4 rebounds, while Tschida Johnson had 7 rebounds, 3 points, and 3 assists.  Alyssa Strickland had 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 points.  Jasmine White contributed 2 points and 2 rebounds. 

Raena Cross dog led the Lady Bravehearts in scoring with 15 points and 6 rebounds.
