Women’s Basketball: Grace Wins Home-Opener Over Waldorf Warriors 63—59

OMAHA, NEBRASKA: The Grace University women's basketball team played their first game of the season at home against the Waldorf College Warriors on Saturday, October 28.  After being up by 8 at halftime, the Royals managed to hold onto their lead to win the game 63—59.  The Royals stand at 1—0 for the season so far.

The Royals and the Warriors battled for the win on Saturday; the score was tied 4 times and the lead changed 8 times.  The Royals gained an early 4—0 advantage over the Warriors.  The Warriors tied the score at 10 a little before the end of the first quarter until a three-pointer from junior Alyssa Strickland gave the Royals a 3-point advantage going into the second quarter.  The Royals continued to slowly build up their lead, winning the second quarter 18—13 and going into halftime with an 8-point advantage 31—23. 

The Royals built their lead up to 11 points, their highest lead of the game, with 7 minutes remaining in the third quarter.  Waldorf went on a run to bring the score to 44—41 at the end of the third quarter.  In the fourth quarter, the Warriors gained the lead, but the Royals went on an 8—2 run to take it back.  A made free throw by sophomore Jasmine White and a three-pointer from Alyssa Strickland helped push the Royals to a four-point lead at 63—59 by the end of the game. 

The Royals shot 42.4% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc.  Grace had 14 assists to Waldorf's 12 and converted Waldorf's 20 turnovers into 18 points.  The Royals also had 38 points in the paint while holding Waldorf to 30 points in the paint. Grace also had 12 fast-break points and did not allow Waldorf to score any fast-break points. 

Junior Darielle Evans led the Royals in scoring with 19 points, 5 steals, and 4 rebounds.  Karen Orozco was two boards away from a double-double with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.  Alyssa Strickland contributed 13 points and 4 assists.  Waldorf's leading scorers were Taylor Fricke with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Michaela Graffunder with 12 points, and Peyton Russell with 11 points. 

UP NEXT: The Royals will host the Mt. Marty Lancers on Wednesday, November 1, starting at 5 p.m. in the Jim Classen Gymnasium.
